Also like HoL, the whole adds up to one cohesive unit for me, but I don't know that I can articulate why. Some people don't like that, and I can understand. The style and organization of this book are unique and interesting. What happens before and after are more like a prologue and epilogue. If you're rushing through the inner story, wondering when the real story will pick back up, you will be frustrated and annoyed. If you think of the inner story as a brief sidetrack or quick aside, you will be frustrated and annoyed.
